About NAPHIT /

The National Association for Public Health Information Technology (NAPHIT) is a national non-profit organization that provides leaders in public health information technology with an avenue to exchange ideas and experiences, discuss and shape current public health information policy, and learn about tools and technologies that help them better support public health.

Our Mission
As a national organization, NAPHIT members represent states, territories, locals and other public health agencies and organizations. We collaborate on and exchange ideas and best practices to improve quality and reduce costs of public health information systems and information technology. We also influence the development and adoption of standards in public health information technology through advocacy and advice to decision makers at the federal, state and local level, and promote a strategic approach to managing information technology solutions that support public health programs.

Why NAPHIT Was Created
NAPHIT was formed to help leaders in public health IT deal with new challenges created by the events of September 11th 2001, the subsequent threats of bio-terrorism, and an ever-increasing role of technology in public health programs. State and local public health agencies now need information systems and reliable and secure underlying technologies that allow timely sharing of accurate and relevant public health data. The association provides a space for leaders in public health IT to exchange their unique and valuable experiences, and the opportunity for these individuals to shape how information systems and technology can better support public health programs.

A Name That Includes All Leaders in Public Health IT
The association was originally named the Association for Public Health Chief Information Officers (APHCIO). To include all leaders in public health IT as opposed to only those with the title CIO, the association recently voted to change the name from APHCIO to the National Association for Public Health Information Technology (NAPHIT).

Goals and Objectives
The members of NAPHIT want the organization to achieve the following goals and objectives:

  • To promote discussion and group action on issues involving public health information policy.
  • To assist in the evaluation, selection and implementation of information technology in support of public health programs.
  • To encourage professional development of leaders in public health information technology through training, education and the exchange of ideas.
  • To further the role of information technology in public health by building relationships and collaborating with federal, state, and local public health agencies and other organizations that share our goals.
