ANNOUNCEMENTS

NAPHIT and PHDSC Join forces to create a new
public health information technology leadership forum

BALTIMORE, MD and Dover, DE March 23, 2009 - The Executive Board of the National Association for Public Health Information Technology (NAPHIT) and the Board of Directors of the Public Health Data Standards Consortium (PHDSC) announced today a new partnership agreement between the two organizations to launch the NAPHIT-PHDSC Leadership Forum.

The NAPHIT-PHDSC Leadership Forum will be the focus of a set of programs and activities aimed at public health IT leaders, public health and clinical professionals and vendors to work together on the health information technology (IT) standardization initiatives and health IT projects implementations to achieve interoperability between public health information systems and public health and clinical information systems under the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN).

“We firmly believe that, at a time when public health agencies need to make hard choices about how valuable time and resources are spent, our newly formed Leadership Forum offers better value as well as a more efficient and effective opportunity for interaction across various stakeholders in health It adoption” explained Dr. Walter Suarez, MD, President of the Consortium. “This new Leadership Forum will help public health IT professionals to get engaged in new and exciting programs and activities related to public health information systems interoperability that would not be possible by either organization on its own” noted Marcy Parykaza, NAPHIT’s President.

Under the NAPHIT-PHDSC Leadership Forum, NAPHIT and PHDSC will work together on various projects related to health IT implementation in public health, standardization of public health information systems and building interoperable health information exchanges between clinical Electronic Health Record Systems and public health information systems. We will also conduct joint webinars to inform public health community about new developments in the public health information systems integration and lessons learnt through the health information technology adoption. Through this new partnership we envision to strengthen public health engagement in the national health information technology standardization efforts and health information technology implementation under a Nationwide Health Information Network.
