One Doctor’s Work to Treat Cancer

Margaret Hamburg has been named as the president-elect for the American Association of Science. Dr, Hamburg fills the position of the foreign secretary for the National Academy of Medicine and is a board member for the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy.

Dr. Hamburg believes this is the time for science because the opportunities are almost limitless. She says if everyone works together there will be vital discoveries in science. These discoveries can become products capable of making a real difference in the world. Supporting science and educating people as to the benefits can change lives in the future.

Previously, Dr. Hamburg was a commissioner for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Between the years of 2009 and 2015 she was responsible for the advance of regulatory science and innovations regarding medical products. She also helped with the laws designed to cut down on the use of tobacco and make food safer to consume. Before joining the FDA, she worked as one of the senior scientists for the Nuclear Threat Initiative and assisted in evaluations and planning for the U.S. Department of Health.

Her extensive knowledge and massive experience in health, science and regulatory affairs has been critical in researching cancer. Jeffrey Bluestone Ph.D. is the CEO at the Parker Institute for Cancer and feels she is a visionary leader who has given the Institute direction and guidance. Dr. Hamburg is still on the board as well as being the foreign secretary for NAM.

The Parker Institute for Cancer puts the best scientists and clinicians in the industry together to help in the research for cancer immunotherapy. Their collaboration of the leading immunologists in the country combined with numerous cancer centers is making a difference in the quality of lives. The creation of the Parker Institute was made possible because of a grant for $250 million dollars that was given from the Parker Foundation.

The goal of the Parker Institute is to advance the development of breakthroughs regarding immune therapies. They believe this is the way to make cancer a disease that is curable. By using the best researchers in the field they are trying to turn what they have discovered into actual treatments for patients. Their network consists of six centers, forty partners, sixty-three labs and over three hundred researchers focusing on treating and curing the deadliest types of cancer.
